C is for Crafts: Tissue Paper Pom Pumpkins

I have a confession to make … I have a little obsession with tissue paper poms. Have you ever made these simple but awesome decorations? If not, you will quickly get hooked on making them! Tissue poms are quick and easy to make and can be made in all kinds of sizes and colors. I have used them for birthday parties, gift wrapping, tablescapes and even hung some from the ceiling in the corner of Ava’s nursery when she was a baby. Earlier this fall it dawned on me that orange tissue paper poms would make awesome pumpkins. It look me awhile to try out my idea, but the results did not disappoint! Supplies

Orange tissue paper – 6-10 sheets depending on how full you want your pumpkin to be

String or baker’s twine

Green cardstock or construction paper

Scissors

Tape

Instructions

Gather your materials and find a flat work surface. Begin by placing your orange tissue paper in a stack in front of you. I used 6 sheets of orange tissue paper for the pumpkins in the photos. I cut my stack of tissue paper in half the long way and was able to make two medium sized pumpkins out of 6 standard sized sheets of tissue. The more sheets of tissue paper that you use, the fuller your tissue pom will be. I buy my tissue paper at a variety of places – craft stores, party stores, dollar stores and general merchandise retailers. Easy to find and inexpensive.

Once you have your tissue paper stacked and cut to size, it is time to begin folding. Starting at the narrow end, fold the tissue paper back and forth like an accordion until you have one rectangular strip of folded tissue paper.

Next, bend the strip in half matching it up end to end. Using a piece of string or baker’s twine, tie a knot tightly around the half way point (the fold).

Using your scissors, round off both ends of the tissue paper strip.

Once you have rounded off the ends of the tissue paper strip, begin to gently pull apart the layers of tissue paper. As you carefully work each sheet open you will see the shape of your tissue pom begin to form. Continue to gently separate all the sheets of tissue and carefully fluff the pom into shape.

Once you are satisfied with the shape of your tissue pom, it is time to add the stem and the tendril. Cut a simple stem shape and a long strip out of green card stock or construction paper. Wrap the long strip of green paper around the barrel of a pen or marker to get a curling effect. Secure the stem and the tendril down into the tissue pom using a piece of clear tape. And there you have it – fun yet simple tissue paper pom pumpkins! Easy as (pumpkin) pie, right?

Once you start making your own tissue paper poms, it will be hard to stop. I’m not even kidding. They are easy and inexpensive to make and the projects and possibilities are endless.
